To revamp smart's iconic brand and support the launch of its new all-electric car lines, we embarked on a transformative journey to deliver an innovative car customization solution. Our mission was to streamline the e-commerce through a direct sales model and data-driven personalization for seamless and user-tailored experiences.

First things first: finding the north star, aka the design vision

Our first step was to create the Design Vision, the north star for the digital experience. With smart's launch of its new car lines, the imperative was clear: to establish a visual strategy that would navigate our designers towards crafting a seamless e-commerce experience. After numerous workshops and design sprints, not only did we capture the essence of our vision, but also began the exciting journey of implementing it into the design.

Now let's bring the vision to life

Navigating a large team, spanning diverse topics and organizations, demanded a finely tuned workflow. Within the foundations team, which was responsible for creating the design system and basic components, we utilized the power of shared libraries to deliver regular design updates to all stakeholders. These libraries became the lifeblood of other teams, ensuring that everyone had access to well-documented, maintained and up-to-date resources.

Implementing the vision

We kicked things off by laying down the essential building blocks. Swiftly addressing the foundational elements proved to be crucial, allowing our cross-functional teams to quickly jump on board to adopt the design. In parallel, we also tackled the core editorial components that could be easily used to build up various interfaces.
